After 500 Years, Russian Volcano Erupted
-Gillian Paul Abayon
The Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka, in the Far Eastern side of Russia, it threw up an ash plume up to six kilometres (3.7 miles) high overnight. According to Russia’s emergency ministry, there are no threats to populated areas.
Experts say the eruption may be linked to last week’s massive earthquake. The last recorded eruption of Krasheninnikov was in the 15th century, according to the head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team.
Strong aftershocks were possible for several weeks after Wednesday’s earthquake, which was one of the strongest ever recorded and saw millions of people evacuate.
The Kamchatka Peninsula though remote but lies within the “Pacific Ring of Fire” because of the high number of earthquakes and volcanoes that occur in that area.
