The Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit (RACU 4A) of PNP ACG apprehended a 30-year-old female suspect in Brgy Salitran, Dasmariñas City, Cavite, last Tuesday, after she accused of scamming a 63-year-old senior citizen of P3 million by pretending to be his niece.

According to the report of Police Col. Ivy Salazar, Chief, RACU 4A, the victim reported the incident to the PNP ACG on February 25, 2023.

The victim narrated that he received a message from the suspect who claimed to be his niece (Ellen Mae) working as an overseas worker in Dubai.

The suspect asked for money to be sent to her in order to facilitate her return to the Philippines, claiming that she was being held captive by Dubai Police and imprisoned in UAE.

The victim believed the suspect’s story and sent money in several transactions, amounting to an estimated total of three million pesos.

On February 24, 2023, the victim received a call from someone claiming to be a Dubai Police Officer named Allah, who asked for an additional fifty thousand pesos for the temporary liberty of the victim’s niece.

This made the victim suspicious and led him to report the incident to the PNP ACG.

After evaluating the information provided by the victim, an entrapment operation was conducted which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.

The suspect is facing criminal charges for violations of Art 215 (Swindling / Estafa), in relation to Sec 6 of RA 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012).

The suspect is currently in the custody of Dasmariñas CPS for documentation and physical examination prior to inquest proceedings.

“As we continue to fight against cybercrime, let us also raise awareness and educate the public on the common schemes and safety tips to avoid falling victim to these kinds of modus. It is crucial that we work together in ensuring the safety and security of our online community. Remember, prevention is better than cure, and staying informed is our first line of defense,” the ACG said.
