Digital solutions platform Globe on Wednesday said that they blocked over 400,000 links and malicious websites containing child pornography last year in support of the government’s all-out war against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) in the country.

In a statement, Globe said that the move was aligned with the international community’s campaign to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones.

Globe said they blocked 399,540 URLs and almost 1,947 domains hosting child pornography in 2022, about 18 times the 22,371 web links blocked in 2021.

This was the result of its $2.7 million investment in systems that filter content about child pornography, illegal gambling, and online piracy.

“Globe stands firmly behind the government’s anti-child pornography law and is committed to doing our part in protecting children from the dangers they may face on the internet. We have always been at the forefront of the fight against online sexual abuse and exploitation of children, and we will continue to take strong measures to restrict access to illegal sites,” Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief Information Security Officer said.

Under RA  9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009, all internet service providers (ISPs) are mandated to install technology, programs, or software to ensure that access to or transmission of child pornography will be blocked or filtered out.

A study by the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) named the Philippines as among the world’s leading sources of content rooted in OSAEC.

Because of this, Globe launched the #MakeITSafePH campaign to promote online child safety by actively educating the public.

It also runs the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), an educational platform that teaches responsible digital citizenship to students, teachers, parents, and netizens.
