Junna Tsukii settles for bronze in Karate1 Series A in Chile

on

MANILA, Philippines — Asian Games bronze and SEA Games gold medalist Junna Tsukii notched a bronze medal in the Female Kumite 50 kg category of the Olympic-qualifying Karate 1 Series A in Santiago, Chile.

Tsukii, one of the country’s top prospects for 2020 Tokyo Olympics, dropped a 2-1 victory over Germany’s Shara Hubrich in the Repechage round that propelled her to win the bronze medal.

She drew her first round bye in the Preliminaries before dominating Moldir Zhangbyrbay of Kazakhstan, 2-0. Then she later fell to Venezuela’s Yorgelis Salazar, 5-7.

After winning the SEA Games gold, Tsukii was controversially bullied by national coach Okay Arpa – an issue that she confessed in social media.

Tsukii targets to continue her medal momentum when she competes in the Karate1 Premier League in Paris from January 24 to 26 in a bid to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. (Lloyd Tagbago/IAMIGO/Currentph.com)

Gatchalian formally ascends Senate President-ship; Cayetano bloc retreats

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s concession that Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s camp had already secured the numbers necessary to take the Senate presidency was an acknowledgment of political reality, not necessarily the end of his faction’s influence. Faced with an inevitable defeat, Cayetano stepped away from the highest seat in the chamber. But his departure came with a telling condition: his allies must retain control of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee — the chamber’s most potent instrument of investigation and political pressure.
