Robredo to decide on Malacañang’s offer tomorrow

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo will issue a statement tomorrow (Wednesday) on whether to accept the appointment as co-chairman of an inter-agency committee against illegal drugs, according to her spokesman, lawyer Barry Gutierrez.
In a press conference, Gutierrez said the Vice President hasn’t reached a decision on whether to accept the appointment as co-chairman of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (IACAD).
Together with her decision on the offer, Gutierrez said Robredo will submit her proposal on the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
“Tomorrow, she (VP Robredo) is presenting to the President kung ano ang kaniyang proposal,” said Gutierrez, who confirmed that the Office of the Vice President received a letter about Vice President Leni Robredo’s appointment from Malacañang at 2 p.m. today.
At first glance, Gutierrez said Malacanang’s offer to Robredo is “useless” since the co-chair post is non-existent under executive officer creating the IACAD.
Also, Gutierrez said the appointment is Malacanang’s acceptance that its war against illegal drugs is a failure.
“Ito ay pagtanggap na mayroon talagang kakulangan yung drug war. Kaya ngayon lumalapit kay VP Leni para siya na yung gawing co-chair nitong ganitong klaseng kumite,” said Gutierrez. (Gerald Alayon/IAMIGO/CNS)

Tacloban School Shooting: The Problem Isn’t Video Games–It’s the...

The Philippines has once again responded to a tragedy involving young people with a familiar reflex: panic first, think later. Following the shooting involving students in Tacloban, attention has quickly shifted toward online games, social media, and a proposed Senate inquiry. The implication is clear. Somewhere inside a computer screen lies the explanation for why young Filipinos would commit violence against one another. It is a comforting theory. It is also probably the wrong one.
