WASHINGTON, D.C. — Persistent rain forced the suspension of the Mubadala DC Open women’s singles final between Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula on Sunday (Monday in the Philippines), postponing the conclusion of the championship match until Monday local time.
The top-seeded Pegula captured the opening set, 6-4, before Eala responded strongly in the second set, taking a 2-1 lead when heavy rain once again halted play. The match had already been delayed by nearly three hours before it finally got underway, as organizers struggled with unfavorable weather conditions throughout the day.
Tournament officials eventually suspended the final after repeated attempts to resume action proved unsuccessful. The championship match is scheduled to continue at 12 noon on Monday (U.S. Eastern Time), with the men’s final to follow afterward.
The delay comes after Eala advanced to her maiden WTA 500 final by defeating Japan’s Naomi Osaka in straight sets, while Pegula earned her place in the championship after overcoming Diana Shnaider in the semifinals.
The prolonged rain also disrupted play at the Canadian Open, where several matches in Toronto and Montreal were postponed because of inclement weather.
