Chinese Ships Fire Water Cannons at Philippine Vessels in West Philippine Sea
December 5, 2024—Tensions in the West Philippine Sea have intensified after Chinese Coast Guard vessels fired water cannons at Philippine ships near Scarborough Shoal. The confrontation disrupted a routine patrol involving the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
The incident escalated when a Chinese vessel reportedly rammed a BFAR ship, forcing it to retreat. Philippine authorities described the action as a breach of international maritime laws and a threat to their sovereignty. This incident is part of a pattern of maritime tensions between the two nations over disputed waters.
China has defended its actions, maintaining that Scarborough Shoal falls within its territorial waters, though the Philippines emphasizes that the area is part of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), as affirmed by a 2016 international tribunal ruling.
The U.S. government has condemned the aggressive maneuvers, reiterating its commitment to support the Philippines under their Mutual Defense Treaty. This follows recent military exercises involving the U.S., Philippines, and Japan, aimed at reinforcing regional security amid rising tensions.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for diplomatic measures to hold China accountable while bolstering the country’s military defenses. The situation has raised concerns among local fishermen, who face increasing risks and restricted access to traditional fishing grounds.
This latest confrontation highlights the persistent volatility in the South China Sea, where overlapping territorial claims continue to jeopardize regional stability. Calls for renewed dialogue are growing to prevent further escalation and maintain peace in the contested waters.
