MPOX in the Philippines: Why Experts Insist It’s Not the New COVID

on

MPOX, previously known as monkeypox, has recently been under the spotlight due to its resurgence in various parts of the world, including the Philippines. Despite the uptick in cases, global health experts emphasize that mpox does not pose the same threat as COVID-19. This article delves into the current situation of mpox in the Philippines, the distinction from COVID-19, and the response strategies being implemented.

Mpox, caused by the mpox virus, belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus, which also includes the variola virus responsible for smallpox. Recent developments have seen a rise in mpox cases globally, with the World Health Organization (WHO) clarifying that the disease is not comparable to COVID-19 in terms of transmission dynamics or public health impact. Unlike COVID-19, which spread rapidly and caused widespread disruption, mpox has been characterized by a more gradual increase in cases and a lower transmission rate.

In August 2024, the Philippines reported new mpox cases, including some with no history of international travel. This indicates that local transmission is occurring. The emergence of these cases highlights the need for vigilant monitoring and effective public health measures. While the current number of mpox cases is relatively low compared to COVID-19, the identification of local transmission raises concerns about the potential for the disease to establish a more persistent presence within the country.

Mpox spreads primarily through direct contact with lesions, body fluids, or contaminated materials, rather than through airborne transmission. This mode of transmission limits its spread compared to respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. COVID-19’s high transmission rate, coupled with its ability to be spread by asymptomatic individuals, led to extensive global disruptions. In contrast, mpox generally causes less severe illness and has a lower transmission rate, making it easier to control through targeted public health measures.

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) has responded to the mpox situation with a range of measures. These include enhanced surveillance to track the spread of the disease, public education campaigns to raise awareness about mpox and its prevention, and increased healthcare resources for diagnosis and treatment. The DOH is collaborating with international health organizations to ensure that best practices are followed and that the response is well-coordinated.

Challenges remain, including the need for widespread public education to prevent misinformation and ensure that individuals understand the symptoms and transmission methods of mpox. Healthcare facilities must be prepared with the necessary diagnostic tools and trained personnel. Accurate and timely reporting of cases is essential for effective surveillance and response. Additionally, ongoing international collaboration is crucial for sharing information and resources.

Looking forward, the management of mpox in the Philippines will require continued vigilance and adaptation of public health strategies. The situation provides an opportunity to learn from the experience and refine responses to other emerging infectious diseases. By leveraging global expertise and tailoring strategies to local contexts, the Philippines can effectively address the mpox outbreak and protect public health.

Mpox in the Philippines underscores a key lesson: while the disease presents challenges, it is not the new COVID-19. The response must balance awareness with action, ensuring that public health measures are both effective and appropriate for the level of threat posed.
