EcoEvolution: Pioneering Change

Within the Whispers of the Mountain

Beyond the mossy ridges, where shadows rest,

I seek solace beneath the saplings of ancient trees,

where spirits whisper secrets to the sky

and mystic realms unveil their mysteries.

The river’s song echoes in my heart;

its gentle melody soothes

and the Earth’s symphony lullabies.

I created a sanctuary, a safe enclave

where leaves pirouette with the breeze;

I see their russet hues like a bright canvas.

Each season’s change is a nudge of my plight.

With soulful yearning, I gaze beyond

to find meaning in the unspoken truth,

of my lowly existence among the great.

I hear the mountain speak of its beauty,

among the leafage and draping canopy.

Their murmurs pierce my soul,

reminding me that I am but a snail.

I move along, and my pace slows.

EcoEvolution: Pioneering Change

Introduction

Our planet beckons us to contemplate the rhythms of nature, where growth and renewal intertwine with the cycles of change. Like the seasons that govern our fields, our journey as stewards of the Earth marked the moments of harvest and introspection. In our pursuit of progress, we must heed the wisdom of ancient cultures that revered the land as sacred. It is good to remember that every seed planted is not an investment in future yields but a vow to nurture the intricacies of life that sustain us all. As we toil the land, may we cultivate compassion, resilience, and a stewardship with our planet, weaving a tapestry where sustainability and spiritual harmony converge.

And in this the vast mosaic, where each leaf whispers a story and every river flows with the secrets of time, humanity treads a delicate path. Allow time to carry us back to the period of political and social turmoil in China between 1910 and 1920s when the protagonist Wang Lung of Pearl Buck’s “The Good Earth” embodies the typical peasant farmer. He faced hardships yet found pride and sustenance in their land to feed his family. After the Qing Dynasty fell in 1911, China dealt with societal fragmentation and military dictatorship of the nationalist Kuomintang party in 1927. But the power of the people, though diverse, united them back – a reflection of a rich culture.

This classic story transcends racial boundaries and offers insight into the universal aspects of the human condition of a farmer bonding with the soil, pride in ownership, and resilience in his character. As for me, this underscores a timeless moral: wealth and security come from the good earth itself. But, true wealth comes from the Source – our Creator.

The Green Revolution

In the mid-20th century, Norman Ernest Borlaug, an American agronomist and Nobel Prize Awardee, led initiatives worldwide that contributed to the extensive increases in agricultural production. He collaborated with Mexican researchers and scientists to create disease-resistant, high-yield wheat varieties, modern irrigations, and chemical innovations to boost crop production. These resilient crops flourished, transforming Mexico into a farming powerhouse. Hunger waned, and malnutrition retreated. Known as the “Green Revolution”, it ignited hope in Mexico, Asia, and Latin America. Because of his achievements, Borlaug has saved more lives than any other person who has ever lived.

The success in Mexico sparked a ripple effect across the globe. India, grappling with burgeoning populations and food shortages, eagerly adopted the Mexican wheat program. The results were staggering: abundant harvests soared and rescued millions from starvation. Similarly, rice underwent a parallel transformation in the Philippines and Asia.

In 1960, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) was established with support from the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Philippine government. IRRI developed semi-dwarf rice varieties (including the famous IR8), which significantly increased yields and the Philippines became a rice exporter for the first time in the 20th century. However, challenges with loans led to an unfair approach – influential landowners benefited more than the poor farmers who tilled their lands under the sweltering heat.

In eastern Brazil, the Cerrado tropical savanna, a once-despised wasteland before the 1960s yielded possibilities by fortifying the dormant soil with lime (pulverized chalk) to reduce the excessive acidity. New soy varieties thrived while production output rose in early 2004. The country became the second soybean exporter in the world. Soybeans are also widely used in animal feeds, and the large volume of soy produced in the country has contributed to the rise of Brazil and become the biggest exporter of beef and poultry in the world. Latin America witnessed a broader shift towards intensified agriculture, albeit accompanied by environmental repercussions.

Unlike Mexico, the Philippines, India, and Brazil, the beginning of China’s unique “green revolution” was unrelated to the American Green Revolution. Communist China launched its rice revolution characterized by government sponsorship of agricultural research, nature-based pest control, and agro-processing to feed the rapidly growing population.

Nature and Progress in the Balance

Yet, alongside these advancements, shadows loomed. Monoculture practices displaced biodiversity, chemical fertilizers scarred the land, and inequality deepened as small farmers struggled to access resources and compete with large agribusinesses. The environment, burdened by intensive farming methods, suffers in silence.

Amid this voyage, our actions reverberate across ecosystems, and surging waves crash on the shorelines to an unfathomable degree. The Green Revolution gently reminds us we are threads in this pattern, weaving life into existence. Hence, we must nurture this planet, our Common Home. As we reap the harvests of progress, can we also sow seeds of genuine compassion?

The Green Revolution breakthrough tilted scales, but balance remains evasive. Nature thrives in equilibrium. Can we embrace innovative technology without forgetting to honor the sanctity of life and safeguard our Common Home? Perhaps the answer lies in a paradox: progress softened by humility, innovation guided by respect. As I write this line, I can say the green community is not just about the crops that feed us for nourishment, but about cultivating compassion, perseverance, and kinship with Mother Earth. And we must remember that what matters most is our faithful relationship with the Creator, the Sustainer of all things.

Reflection

Today, the Philippines stands at a crossroads. The echoes of the Green Revolution linger. Our terraced mountains and seagrasses bear witness. Communities plant saplings, cradling hope. Armed with cutting-edge technologies like genome editing and modern agriculture, we face a pivotal choice. Can we harness these tools to safeguard our planet while nurturing compassion, resilience, and unity? Yes, challenges persist, but as the morning sun kisses the beautiful thousand islands, let us awaken the Bayanihan and let Kapwa guide us, listening to the Earth’s call as we grow in wisdom.

The poem I wrote resonates and beckons us to contemplate the rhythms of nature, where growth and renewal intertwine with the cycles of change. As guardians of the Earth, may our shields of love and steadfastness protect her from the vandals that slowly cripple her ecosystem. This is our planet, our future generations green home.
