PH TRAPO Infighting Risks Unacceptable

on

The resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte from the Marcos cabinet has heralded a new chapter in Philippine politics, exposing the nation to unprecedented risks. This open political war between the traditional politician (trapo) blocs representing the interests of the Marcos and Duterte dynasties threatens to weaken the republic from within at a time when external threats to national security are intensifying. The self-serving conflicting interests of these trapos, as they attempt to eradicate one another to perpetuate their own power, are clearly inimical to the broader public interest of the Filipino people.

The Roots of the Conflict

The schism within the administration, catalyzed by Duterte’s resignation, marks the beginning of a potentially destructive battle between two of the country’s most formidable political dynasties. Both factions have been key players in shaping Philippine politics for decades, often prioritizing their own interests over those of the nation. The ongoing infighting is not merely a clash of egos but a strategic struggle for control that could have dire consequences for the country’s stability and governance.

Recent analyses suggest that the traditional lines of opposition in Philippine politics are being redrawn. What once seemed like a monolithic alliance of the Marcos-Duterte tandem is fracturing, creating new political configurations that could redefine the landscape. There are rumors of the Liberal Party merging with Marcos’ Partido Federal – Lakas NUCD alliance, while progressive elements within the LP might bolt out. Senator Risa Hontiveros and Akbayan could accept the call of Reform PH, a rightist alliance of RAM and Magdalo, to challenge Sotto’s NPC and Lacson alliance. Meanwhile, PDP-Laban’s Pimentel wing and the NPC might form a new opposition bloc, with Hontiveros as a potential presidential candidate in 2028.

National Security Concerns

This infighting comes at a perilous time. The Philippines is grappling with serious external threats to national security, particularly in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Chinese aggression and territorial incursions in the WPS are ongoing concerns that require a united and focused government response. Instead, the political elite is preoccupied with internal power struggles.

Adding to the complexity are growing concerns about national security breaches stemming from Chinese control over parts of the country’s power distribution system. The proliferation of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), linked to syndicated criminal activities and potential security threats, exacerbates the situation. Reports of “sleeper Chinese government agents” among the hundreds, if not thousands, of questionable Chinese nationals in the Philippines add another layer of risk.

The rise of Chinese businesses in local communities and the possibility of politicians who might be Chinese nationals or agents, like Mayor Alice Guo, further complicate the security landscape. These issues demand a robust and unified response, which seems increasingly unlikely amid the trapo infighting.

The Trapo vs. The People

The self-serving nature of the trapo blocs is becoming more apparent as they vie for dominance. The Marcos and Duterte camps are not fighting for the Filipino people but for their dynastic survival and control. This scenario weakens the nation’s ability to address critical issues and undermines the very fabric of Philippine democracy.

The emerging political realignment suggests a bleak future for traditional opposition forces. If the Liberal Party merges with the Marcos-Duterte alliance, progressives like Senator Hontiveros and Akbayan might find themselves in a new rightist opposition bloc. Meanwhile, other parties, including Aksyon Demokratiko, could either join this opposition or remain fence-sitters in the upcoming 2025 elections.

This potential reconfiguration underscores the need for a genuine opposition that prioritizes public good over personal gain. The trapo infighting is a dangerous distraction from the real issues facing the nation. It is a stark reminder that the traditional political elite is more concerned with their power struggles than with the welfare of the Filipino people.

A Call to Action

The citizens of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao must recognize this façade for what it is: a battle between factions of the oligarchy that does little to serve the public interest. The trapo infighting threatens to make the Philippines a pawn in the geopolitical games of other nations, particularly in the West’s strategic rivalry with China. As the political elite focuses on their internecine conflicts, the country risks becoming embroiled in another proxy war, this time between the West and China.

Filipinos must reject this trapo politics and support a more legitimate opposition force that embodies the public good and national interest. This new force must prioritize serious national security threats, avoid war at all costs, and refuse to be pawns in international power struggles. We must no longer be hostages to trapo politics that prioritize personal gain over national welfare.

The current political crisis is a clarion call for the Filipino people to take action. The trapos have shown that they are incapable of governing in the nation’s best interest. It is time for a new political movement that can confront the serious national security threats facing the Philippines, promote genuine self-determination, and protect the country’s sovereignty.

Conclusion

The trapo infighting between the Marcos and Duterte blocs is an unacceptable risk to the Philippines. It weakens the republic from within and distracts from critical national security threats. The self-serving nature of these political dynasties, focused on their power struggles, undermines the public interest and jeopardizes the country’s stability.

The Filipino people must see through this façade and reject the trapo politics that have long dominated the country. We must no longer be hostages to trapo politics and their fat political dynasties. It is time to galvanize unified support for a more legitimate opposition force that truly represents the public good. Only by vanquishing these trapos and their political dynasties can the Philippines hope to address its serious national security threats, avoid becoming a pawn in geopolitical conflicts, and achieve genuine national and public interests.

The stakes are too high for the Philippines to remain mired in the politics of self-interest and power grabs. The citizens of LuzViMinda must demand better and work towards a political future that serves the nation, not the interests of a select few. This is the only way to ensure a stable, secure, and prosperous Philippines for all.
