Senator Imee Marcos is firm in her statement against amending the 1987 Constitution – for the moment.

In a media conference after her guesting at the “Buntis Day Celebration on Friday held at the St. Jude Multi-Purpose Cooperative Hotel in Barangay Isabang here, she told members of the media that a constitutional convention (con-con) for Charter change is untimely.

“There are more pressing matters now like unemployment, inflation, high price of commodities, and food shortage which I think, needs urgent attention,” Marcos said.

“I’m also worried that this con-con may distract our leaders and veer away from crucial concerns like peace and order situation. There are successive assassinations of our public officials like Governor Degamo and Vice Mayor Alameda of Aparri and they have to be resolved,” she added.

Marcos admitted there are several provisions in the 1987 Constitution that need to be changed, but not immediately.

Earlier, Marcos was the guest speaker at the Buntis Day Celebration, organized by the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) and its Southern Tagalog Chapter.

In the event, Marcos provided pregnant women with maternity starter kits containing vitamins and other pregnancy materials while the organizers offered more than 300 expectant mothers free prenatal checkups, ultrasound and lecture on proper breastfeeding.

The occasion was part of the International Women’s Month celebration.
