Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo will announce her decision this week on whether she will run for president in the 2022 national elections.
Robredo’s spokesperson Barry Gutierrez told a news wire service that she has not yet accepted the nomination of the opposition led by 1Sambayan to run for president in 2022, and her decision will be announced before Friday, or the last day for the filing of candidacies for next year’s elections.
However, there were reports that Robredo met with the tandem of Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and his running mate, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III in what can be seen as a last-ditch effort to unite the opposition for 2022. No report has come out yet from the meeting.
1Sambayan announced last Thursday that it has chosen Robredo as its presidential bet for 2022.
The group said 1Sambayan followed a rigorous process in deciding on its 2022 presidential candidate.
“1Sambayan followed a rigorous process in reaching its decision. We consulted our local and foreign chapters as well as our partners together with our three million members,” said retired senior associate justice Antonio Carpio, the group’s lead convenor.
But 1Sambayan said it would seek another presidential bet for 2022 if Robredo does not accept their nomination.
