MANILA, Philippines – In a media forum Sunday (12 January 2020), Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary Engr. Alberto Suansing warned the public not to buy motorcycles just yet as the government’s plan on granting franchises to motorcycle taxis is still being carefully studied.

On top of this, according to the former LTO chief, is the concern for safety which he said is paramount as it seems helmets as protective gear for motorcycle passengers may not be enough.

Hence, Suansing said Congress should take the matter into consideration aside from looking for other safety precautions that might be included before granting motorcycle taxis a franchise.

It may be recalled the DOTr’s technical working group launched a test run of sort during the holidays where it allowed participation of two other ride hailing agencies JoyRide and MoveIt.

As a result of the successful test run, the DOTr set a ceiling of 10,000 franchise applicants for JoyRide and MoveIt, and so with Angkas which needs to shed at least 17,000 of its current number of units to meet the 10,000 limit. (Benjie Cuaresma/JGo/Currentph.com)
