A Senior field officer of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) was shot dead by two masked men riding a motorcycle in Malate Manila early evening today, November 4.
Helen F. Dacanay, a Senior Labor and Employment Officer, has just left her office at the DOLE-NCR at Maligaya street in Malate Manila and was with a companion inside her car when they were accosted by two men riding a motorcycle at the corner of General Malvar street and Taft Avenue, about one kilometer or two away from her office.
One of the men reportedly shot her point blank. After pumping bullets into her body, the assailants immediately escaped.
Witnesses who saw the shooting helped rush Dacanay to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival at exactly 6:10 in the evening.
Labor secretary Silvestre Bello III who just came from a trip abroad condemned the killing and urged the police to immediately investigate and arrest those responsible.
Police are still looking for leads to identify the assailants. Sources say Manila police officials are coordinating with several DOLE officials and employees to shed light on the killing. Dacanay’s companion is also being investigated.
Dacanay, sources say, works as a Senior Labor and Employment Officer at the NCR office of the labor department. She is reportedly involved in conducting seminars and workshops for labor relations.
The murder comes a few weeks before the celebration of the labor department’s anniversary.
