MC Taxi Riders Seek Fuel Subsidy Reform and Legal Protection in PH Debate
Motorcycle taxi riders are calling for sweeping reforms as rising fuel prices continue to reduce their daily earnings and expose long-standing issues in the transport sector. During the discussion, rider representatives detailed how inconsistent fuel subsidy implementation, increasing gasoline costs, and the absence of permanent regulations have left thousands of riders struggling to earn a stable income.
The forum examined proposals to audit the implementation of the government’s fuel subsidy program, improve transparency in the distribution of public funds, and ensure that eligible drivers receive the assistance intended for them. Transport leaders also argued that direct fare adjustments may provide more reliable relief than temporary subsidy programs that many riders say remain difficult to access.
Another major issue raised was the need to legalize the motorcycle taxi industry through a comprehensive regulatory framework. Representatives urged lawmakers to establish clear rules covering rider registration, passenger safety, operational standards, student and PWD fare policies, and long-term protection for both drivers and commuters.
The discussion also covered transport modernization, multihoming concerns, road safety during severe weather, government accountability, inflation, and the broader impact of rising fuel prices on Filipino workers who depend on motorcycle taxis for their livelihood.
