AFP Rebuts China’s Batanes Claim Amid Sara Duterte Trial Updates

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) strongly rejected China’s latest narrative involving Batanes, calling for stronger public awareness and continued defense of Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea. During the briefing, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent T. Trinidad explained why China’s recent claims, maritime activities, and information campaigns should be viewed as part of a broader strategy to advance its interests without direct military confrontation. He also addressed China’s proposal for a common fishing area near Bajo de Masinloc, the reported presence of 74 Chinese vessels inside the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), developments surrounding Recto Bank (Reed Bank), and the Philippines’ expanding defense posture in both the West Philippine Sea and Northern Luzon.

The same briefing also featured Prof. Guido David, who shared his assessment of the first three days of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial. According to his analysis, public opinion remains largely unchanged, with supporters and critics maintaining their positions while many independent Filipinos continue waiting for more evidence before reaching a conclusion. He also discussed how social listening indicates that neither the prosecution nor the defense has secured a decisive advantage, despite the trial dominating national headlines.

Beyond the impeachment proceedings, the discussion highlighted the continuing flood control controversy, which Prof. Guido David said remains one of the country’s most significant public concerns. He emphasized that accountability for flood control projects should remain a national priority, particularly as the rainy season continues to expose infrastructure failures across the country. The briefing concluded by stressing that the impeachment trial extends beyond politics, with potential implications for governance, investor confidence, poverty, inflation, unemployment, national security, and the Philippines’ response to ongoing challenges in the West Philippine Sea.
