President Marcos Urges Congress to Convene for Special Session

By Master JJ

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called Congress to convene in a special session on June 17 to discuss and approve priority measures that aim to strengthen social protection programs and address urgent national concerns.

The President issued the call to ensure that important legislation affecting Filipino families will not face further delays despite the ongoing leadership dispute in the Senate.

The special session will focus on priority bills designed to improve government assistance and provide better protection for vulnerable sectors of society.

The administration emphasized that these measures are necessary because many Filipinos continue to face economic challenges and the effects of rising living costs.

The Constitution grants the President the authority to call Congress into a special session whenever urgent legislative matters require immediate attention.

The decision follows the delay of several legislative measures due to disagreements over the leadership of the Senate, which have affected the progress of its legislative functions.

They expressed their willingness to attend the special session and fulfill their constitutional responsibilities despite the ongoing political situation.

Senator Joel Villanueva affirmed his commitment to participate in the proceedings and stated that senators have a duty to attend the special session once it is officially convened.

All senators were encouraged to participate in the session, emphasizing that their attendance would help resolve the leadership conflict and restore the normal operations of the Senate.

Legal experts further explained that the presence of all senators would ensure a quorum, allowing the chamber to deliberate on priority measures without unnecessary delays.

Government officials stressed that the proposed legislation seeks to strengthen assistance for workers, low-income families, senior citizens, and other vulnerable groups who rely on government support.

The administration also expressed hope that the special session would redirect the attention of lawmakers from political disagreements to issues that directly affect the welfare of the Filipino people.

Congress is expected to meet on June 17 to deliberate on the priority measures identified by the President and take the necessary legislative action to advance these proposals.

The special session is likewise seen as an opportunity to restore the regular functions of Congress while ensuring that urgent programs and policies receive immediate consideration.

Through this initiative, the government aims to promote cooperation among lawmakers and accelerate the passage of legislation that will provide meaningful benefits and stronger social protection for the Filipino people.

Gatchalian formally ascends Senate President-ship; Cayetano bloc retreats

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s concession that Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s camp had already secured the numbers necessary to take the Senate presidency was an acknowledgment of political reality, not necessarily the end of his faction’s influence. Faced with an inevitable defeat, Cayetano stepped away from the highest seat in the chamber. But his departure came with a telling condition: his allies must retain control of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee — the chamber’s most potent instrument of investigation and political pressure.
