ICC Says it is Closely Monitoring Former President Duterte’s Health

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the health of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, given the ongoing proceedings related to alleged crimes against humanity tied to his administration’s war on drugs.

In a statement released by The Hague-based tribunal, ICC officials emphasized that Duterte’s medical condition is a matter of concern, as it could directly affect the progress of investigations and potential legal proceedings. “The Court continues to observe and monitor reports regarding the health of former President Duterte to ensure that judicial processes are not compromised,” the ICC noted.

The ICC clarified that monitoring the health of individuals under investigation is part of its mandate, particularly when their condition could impact accountability mechanisms or the ability to face charges. The Court did not disclose specific details about Duterte’s current health, citing privacy and confidentiality rules.

Human rights groups welcomed the ICC’s move, stressing that Duterte’s health status should not become a barrier to justice. “Accountability must not be evaded due to claims of illness unless fully and independently verified,” one advocacy group said.

Meanwhile, allies of the former president dismissed the ICC’s statement as political interference. “The Philippines is no longer part of the ICC. This so-called monitoring is just another way of undermining our sovereignty,” a Duterte ally in Congress said.

The Duterte camp has not yet issued an official response, though in previous interviews, the former president admitted to experiencing health issues but insisted he remained fit to face scrutiny.

The ICC investigation into the Philippines’ anti-drug campaign, which claimed thousands of lives, remains ongoing despite the government’s refusal to cooperate. The Court has reiterated that its jurisdiction covers crimes allegedly committed during Duterte’s term, when the Philippines was still a party to the Rome Statute.

Observers note that the ICC’s decision to publicly highlight its monitoring of Duterte’s health signals the tribunal’s determination to pursue the case, regardless of political or jurisdictional challenges.
