-Gillian Paul Abayon
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has confirmed on Tuesday, that the loud explosions heard in the eastern part of Palawan on Monday, were linked to China’s Long March 12 rocket launch.
Residents reported hearing at least five booming sounds on August 4, later verified to be consistent with the propulsion and exhaust of a rocket launched from the Hainan International Commercial Launch Center in Wenchang, China.
“We have received reports of a visible smoke trail and a loud sound overhead by individuals in Palawan between 6:30 to 6:45 p.m. yesterday,” PhilSA said in a statement.
“Initial assessment indicates that these are associated with the launch of China’s Long March 12 rocket from the Hainan International Commercial Launch Center,” the agency added on their statement.
“Upon immediate verification, a visible condensation trail was observed in the sky, consistent with rocket exhaust or propulsion”. said by PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Commodore Jay Tarriela.
“Mariners and the public are advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings of potential debris to local PCG stations” Tarriela added.
There is no immediate danger to safety or navigation.
The PCG assured that maritime safety and environmental protection remains their top priority as foreign rocket launched and debris fell within the Philippine territory.
