NEWSFLASH: Sara Duterte Slammed with Third Impeachment Complaint

on

In a fiery twist to Philippine politics, Vice President Sara Duterte faces her third impeachment complaint, filed on December 19, 2024, by a coalition of legal experts, religious leaders, and civil society advocates.

The complainants include the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers-Mindanao (NUPL-Mindanao), Bishop Gerardo Alminaza of the Diocese of San Carlos, Fr. Antonio Samson, S.J., and former Congressman Teddy Casiño, alongside various civil society organizations advocating for transparency and accountability in governance.

The complaint accuses Duterte of corruption, gross misconduct, and betrayal of public trust. At the center of the allegations is the supposed misuse of ₱612.5 million in confidential funds during her tenure as Vice President and Education Secretary. Critics argue this constitutes a flagrant violation of constitutional provisions and a severe breach of public trust.

Adding further controversy are allegations that Duterte issued death threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. These remarks, reportedly made during a November 23 online news conference, have been described as alarming and unprecedented. Duterte later claimed her statements were expressions of concern for her own safety due to alleged threats she had received.

This latest impeachment bid reflects the widening rift between Duterte and President Marcos, whose political alliance during the 2022 elections has since deteriorated. The complaint now heads to the House of Representatives, where allies of President Marcos hold the majority. If it gains traction, an impeachment trial in the Senate could mark a decisive moment in Philippine political history.

Despite the mounting challenges, Duterte remains defiant. She has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and vowed to remain in the country to confront the charges directly. “I don’t think this investigation will be fair… From the very beginning, they already decided to file cases,” Duterte stated in response to the complaint.

With three impeachment complaints filed against her in rapid succession, this latest move adds to the intensifying political drama surrounding Duterte. Beyond the Vice President’s fate, the case poses a critical test for the country’s democratic institutions and their ability to uphold accountability and rule of law.

As the Philippines braces for what could be a politically charged impeachment process, the nation’s focus remains on whether this latest complaint will mark a turning point in its governance and political culture.
