Mt. Kanlaon Eruption Forces Over 1,800 to Flee; State of Calamity Declared

on

The majestic Mt. Kanlaon, located in the Visayas region of the Philippines, has erupted, sending shockwaves through surrounding communities and prompting the evacuation of over 1,800 residents. The eruption, which occurred on June 4, 2024, unleashed a plume of ash that reached an altitude of 5 kilometers into the sky. Authorities have declared a state of calamity in the affected areas, recognizing the urgent need for assistance and resources to aid those displaced by the volcanic activity.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon has triggered mandatory evacuations in nearby towns and cities. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned residents to stay away from the danger zone as the volcano remains volatile and could potentially erupt again. Despite a period of relative quiet after the initial eruption, experts emphasize that Mt. Kanlaon still poses a significant threat.

The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon has disrupted the lives of thousands of residents, forcing them to leave their homes and seek refuge in evacuation centers. Local government units, in coordination with various agencies and organizations, are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of evacuees. However, challenges such as limited resources and infrastructure damage are hampering relief efforts.

In the wake of the eruption, lahars—mudflows containing volcanic debris—have been reported in the vicinity of Mt. Kanlaon. These lahars pose additional risks to communities downstream, threatening homes, crops, and infrastructure. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents to remain vigilant and prepared for further volcanic activity.

The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon has garnered international attention, with news outlets around the world reporting on the unfolding crisis. The Guardian, a renowned British newspaper, highlighted the eruption and its impact on the Philippines, underscoring the need for global solidarity and support in times of natural disasters.

In response to the eruption, the Philippine government has mobilized resources to assist affected communities. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has announced plans to provide financial aid amounting to 40 million pesos through its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program. This aid aims to help families affected by the eruption rebuild their lives and recover from the devastation caused by the volcanic activity.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is set to implement its Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program in the affected areas. This program will provide temporary employment opportunities to displaced workers, offering them a source of income as they rebuild their communities.

As the situation continues to unfold, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and heed safety advisories issued by Phivolcs and other relevant agencies. The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of volcanic activity and the importance of preparedness and disaster risk reduction measures in mitigating its impact on vulnerable communities.

In the face of adversity, the Filipino spirit of resilience and solidarity shines through as communities come together to support one another in the aftermath of the eruption. With continued assistance and support from the government, humanitarian organizations, and the international community, affected residents can begin the process of rebuilding and recovery, ensuring a brighter future for themselves and future generations in the shadow of Mt. Kanlaon.

Additionally, the eruption has prompted the Department of Agriculture (DA) to assess the damage to agricultural lands and provide assistance to affected farmers. The DA has dispatched teams to evaluate the impact of volcanic ash on crops and livestock in the surrounding areas. Efforts are underway to provide farmers with the necessary resources and support to mitigate the economic repercussions of the eruption and ensure food security in the region.
