A Philippine retail store announced on THURSDAY that they will accept “Onions” (sibuyas) as payment for select in-store items on Saturday, February 4.

According to the social media account of Japan Home Centre (JHC), they will accept their first ever “pay with sibuyas” promo, wherein an onion – which is deemed elusive and expensive nowadays, can be accepted as a mode of payment.

An onion can be used to purchase in exchange for the customer’s chosen product.

However, only three items per purchase will be allowed for every customer.

It also limited to Japan Home Centre’s Panay Avenue branch. For those curious of who want to try it out, they can visit the store at 84 Panay Avenue, Quezon City, near Victoria Towers.

According to the retail store, all the onions that will be collected from their sales will be used for a community pantry.

JHC clarified though that they will still accept cash and coins especially if you ran out of onions.

The retail store did not mention though as the size of the onions can be used for purchase, so it would advisable to bring a variety of them should you consider buying from JHC.

Onions had been a problem in the Philippines with soaring prices with a maximum of P750 per kilogram at one time. It has gone down slowly due to government interventions, the Kadiwa stores and importation.

According to the website of Japan Home Centre, they are “the country’s first and original Japanese discount P88 store.”

Their brand opened its their first branch in 2004 in Market! Market!, Taguig City.
