The death toll from the catastrophic magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore Mindanao on June 8, 2026, has reached at least 68 people, with dozens more still missing as rescue and recovery operations continue.

According to updates from national disaster management agencies and international humanitarian trackers, the violent subduction movement along the
Cotabato Trench struck at 7:37 AM, triggering widespread panic and immense structural
damage.

In General Santos City and across Sarangani province, the shaking reached an exceptionally
destructive Intensity VII to VIII on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale, causing buildings
to collapse into rubble and triggering landslides that isolated remote communities.

The sheer power of the main shock also generated localized tsunami waves exceeding one meter, which slammed into the coastal zones of Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat, forcing massive, preemptive evacuations of tens of thousands of residents.

Reports from environmental authorities and national media outlets revealed a staggering
geological phenomenon as a result of the tectonic thrust, as the quake permanently uplifted
sections of the southern Mindanao seabed by up to two meters.

This rapid coastal uplift moved the shoreline seaward by as much as 200 meters in several locations, instantly exposing vulnerable coral reefs, harming local marine life, and fundamentally altering the landscape.

On the ground, emergency teams from the Philippine Red Cross and local disaster units are
facing persistent rain and thousands of recorded aftershocks, including a powerful secondary
tremor that registered a magnitude of 6.4 to clear blocked highway networks and deploy vital relief packages to displaced populations.

Due to the severe compromises in infrastructure
safety, more than 3 million learners remain affected as public school classes across the regions remain strictly suspended.

On Monday, June 15, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. arrived in General Santos City to preside
over an emergency situation briefing at the Oval Plaza, assuring shattered communities that the national government will sustain its long-term reconstruction support. The President directly oversaw the turnover of 11 Patient Transport Vehicles to local health units and authorized the distribution of immediate relief aid through the Socio-Civic Projects Fund.

Simultaneously, state volcanologists have issued urgent public advisories warning families to
remain cautious of structurally weakened covered courts, gyms, and municipal buildings, while
actively urging citizens to ignore unverified text loops and disinformation spreading on social
platforms amid the ongoing crisis.
