Moveit Logs Most Motorcycle Taxi Accidents; Lawmaker Pushes Mandatory Rider Safety Training
Motorcycle ride-hailing platform Moveit recorded the highest number of road accidents among motorcycle taxi vehicle services (MTVS) last year, according to the Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG). The data was presented during a House Committee on Transportation hearing.
HPG records showed Moveit accounted for 476 accidents, or 35.2 percent of all motorcycle taxi-related incidents from 2024 to 2025. Grab followed with 293 cases (21 percent), Joyride with 240 cases (17.7 percent), while Angkas logged 236 and Lalamove 208 crashes.
Nationwide, vehicular accidents reached 31,258 in 2024, marking a 27.6-percent increase from 24,495 the previous year. Although motorcycle taxi-related cases comprised only 1,353 incidents, or 0.04 percent of the total, lawmakers said the trend raises urgent road safety concerns.
Transportation committee chair Rep. Brian Llamazares called for a review of the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) licensing process. He proposed a mandatory motorcycle safety driving program for new and renewing license applicants, emphasizing skills-based training in defensive driving, hazard awareness, and road courtesy.
HPG reported that reckless behavior, including speeding, improper overtaking, distracted riding, and drunk driving, caused 87 percent of motorcycle crashes in 2024. Advocates said structured safety training could help reduce these risks significantly.
Road safety experts highlighted Angkas’ strict “No Training, No Hire” policy, which has yielded a 99.997-percent safety record verified by third-party audits. Supporters of mandatory training argued that adopting similar measures nationwide could save lives and improve the Philippines’ road safety standards.
