PNP Chief Nicolas Torre III Relieved from Post, Replaced by Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
On August 26, 2025, Malacañang confirmed the relief of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Nicolas Torre III through an official letter signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin. The order directed Torre to turn over all official documents and responsibilities immediately.
Replacing him is Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy’s Tanglaw Diwa Class of 1992, known for his extensive background in combat operations, intelligence, and police leadership. He has previously served as Ilocos Norte police chief, CALABARZON regional director, NCRPO chief, and Deputy Chief for Administration.
Reports suggest that Torre’s reassignment conflicts with directives from the National Police Commission, allegedly leading to tensions between Malacañang and the Department of Justice. Sources claim Torre resisted political pressure regarding the transfer of certain police officials, many of whom were linked to high-ranking government personalities.
The controversy has fueled speculation of deeper political divisions within Malacañang, coming just weeks after NBI Chief Jimmy Santiago tendered his irrevocable resignation. Observers warn that such leadership changes may undermine the administration’s anti-corruption campaign and weaken public trust in law enforcement institutions.
As the new PNP chief, Nartatez is expected to navigate not only organizational challenges but also sensitive political dynamics, especially as the administration faces ongoing corruption allegations in major infrastructure projects, including flood control programs.
The coming weeks will determine whether Torre’s removal signals a routine leadership transition or the beginning of a larger political shake-up in the government.
