Sara, Isko, Marcos, Pacquiao or Go prospects for administration’s presidential bet in 2022

The administration is eyeing the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte and four other prominent political personalities as choices for its bet for the country’s top post in the May 2022 polls, the Palace said on Wednesday.

Those being considered for the administration’s standard bearer in May 2022 are Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso, former senator Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr., Senator Manny Pacquiao or Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, a close ally of Duterte.

Go made headlines earlier this week for saying he is not interested in running for president in 2022.

While Sara earlier said she is not interested in running for president in 2022, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda said on Tuesday that at least five political parties are forming alliances to support her presidential bid in 2022.

“I can bet that we might have, the first, significantly unopposed presidential candidate,” Salceda said.

Meanwhile, Duterte has not yet affirmed if he is running for vice president in 2022 even if the ruling PDP-Laban party passed a resolution on Monday urging him to run for the post.

Gatchalian formally ascends Senate President-ship; Cayetano bloc retreats

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s concession that Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s camp had already secured the numbers necessary to take the Senate presidency was an acknowledgment of political reality, not necessarily the end of his faction’s influence. Faced with an inevitable defeat, Cayetano stepped away from the highest seat in the chamber. But his departure came with a telling condition: his allies must retain control of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee — the chamber’s most potent instrument of investigation and political pressure.
