MANILA, Philippines — Cheers, applause, and waving Philippine flags greeted Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala as she arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Sunday following her historic campaign at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.
Hundreds of fans, supporters, and members of the media gathered at the arrival area to welcome the 21-year-old tennis star, whose remarkable run in London captivated the nation. Eala became the first Filipino player to reach the Round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament, cementing her place in Philippine sports history.
Despite falling to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round, Eala earned worldwide recognition after upsetting defending champion Iga Swiatek and showcasing her fearless brand of tennis throughout the tournament. Her performance inspired millions of Filipinos and sparked renewed interest in the sport across the country.
Upon her arrival, Eala thanked her supporters for their unwavering encouragement throughout her Wimbledon journey.
“I’m overwhelmed by the love and support from everyone back home. Wearing the Philippine colors on one of tennis’ biggest stages has been an incredible honor, and this welcome means so much to me,” she said.
Government officials, sports leaders, and young tennis players also joined the homecoming celebration, praising Eala for inspiring a new generation of Filipino athletes to dream bigger and compete on the world stage.
Eala is expected to take part in several homecoming activities before resuming preparations for the North American hard-court season, with her sights set on building on her Wimbledon breakthrough.
Her historic run has not only elevated Philippine tennis on the international stage but has also reaffirmed that Filipino athletes can compete with—and defeat—the world’s best. As chants of “Welcome home, Alex!” echoed through the airport, the nation celebrated not just a remarkable athlete, but a trailblazer whose journey continues to inspire millions.
