LONDON— Alexandra Eala produced the biggest victory of her young career on Saturday, stunning defending Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek in straight sets to become the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament.
The 21-year-old Filipina delivered a fearless performance on Center Court, defeating the third-seeded Polish star 7-6 (11-9), 6- 2 in one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
The victory further cements Eala’s status as one of the brightest young stars in women’s tennis and marks the continuation of a remarkable breakthrough season in which she has consistently challenged and defeated some of the sport’s biggest names.
Facing a player who entered Wimbledon as the reigning champion and a six-time Grand Slam winner, Eala refused to be intimidated. Instead, she matched Świątek shot for shot in a pulsating opening set that lasted more than an hour, then prevailed in a tense tiebreak.
That breakthrough proved decisive.
With the confidence gained from stealing the opening set, Eala dominated the second set. She unleashed her trademark aggressive baseline game, moved superbly around the court, and repeatedly forced the defending champion into uncharacteristic errors.
As the final point landed inside the line, Eala raised both arms in celebration before soaking in the applause from an appreciative Center Court crowd that had witnessed history.
“This means everything,” an emotional Eala said after the match as she reflected on her journey from the Philippines to one of tennis’ grandest stages. She thanked her family, coaches, and Filipino supporters who have followed her remarkable rise.
The triumph was especially sweet for Eala, who had entered the tournament riding high after rallying past Australia’s Maya Joint in the second round. Against Świątek, she elevated her game even further, displaying the poise and tactical maturity of a seasoned veteran despite her young age.
For Philippine sports, the victory is another landmark achievement.
Eala has steadily rewritten the country’s tennis record book over the past two years, becoming the highest-ranked Filipina in WTA history and now the first Filipino to advance to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon in the Open Era. Her latest accomplishment also reinforces her growing reputation as one of the most dangerous young players on the WTA Tour.
The upset also reverberated across the tournament, with Świątek’s early exit blowing open the women’s draw. Analysts hailed Eala’s composure under pressure, aggressive shot-making, and fearless approach against one of the game’s biggest stars.
Eala now advances to the fourth round, where she will face 13th seed Jasmine Paolini for a place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Regardless of the outcome, the Filipina has already secured the best Grand Slam result of her career and added another unforgettable chapter to Philippine sporting history.
