1.8 Million Strong: Iglesia ni Cristo Rally Sparks Debate Over VP Sara Duterte

on

A massive rally organized by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) drew an estimated 1.8 million participants in a demonstration for “peace and unity” held on January 13, 2025, across several Philippine cities, with a concentration in Metro Manila. The event, described by its organizers as a “National Peace Rally,” has sparked widespread discussion over its motives and implications, particularly in relation to Vice President Sara Duterte.

The rally, which brought traffic to a standstill in key urban centers, saw INC members in droves, waving white flags as a symbol of unity. The Iglesia leadership emphasized the rally’s purpose as promoting national harmony amidst rising political and social tensions. However, critics have questioned the timing of the event, as Duterte faces scrutiny over allegations of irregularities in her discretionary funds.

Vice President Duterte, who expressed her gratitude to the INC for organizing the event, underscored the importance of national peace in her remarks to supporters. Former President Rodrigo Duterte also extended his thanks to the religious organization, highlighting the role of such movements in fostering unity in a politically divided nation.

Nevertheless, the event has drawn criticism from opposition groups, with some lawmakers accusing the INC of using its vast influence to shield Duterte from accountability. One representative pointed out that the rally’s unprecedented scale could divert public attention from pressing issues, including calls for transparency in the use of government funds.

The Department of Justice, which is currently probing the allegations against the Vice President, maintained that the rally would not sway its investigation. Justice officials reiterated their commitment to a fair and thorough review of the case.

The INC, known for its bloc voting and significant political clout, has historically played a role in Philippine elections and governance. The turnout for the rally highlighted its organizational strength, with participants mobilized from various provinces, including Central Luzon and Southern Mindanao. Observers noted that the INC’s involvement in such large-scale demonstrations could influence public discourse and sentiment, regardless of its stated neutrality.

While the rally drew praise from Duterte’s allies, who hailed it as a testament to her leadership and public support, critics pointed to the possible implications of using religion as a political tool. Analysts have noted the INC’s ability to amass a “show of force,” often interpreted as a reminder of its significant role in shaping national politics.

The rally also reignited debates on the separation of church and state in the Philippines. Advocacy groups have called for clearer delineations to prevent the undue influence of religious institutions in political matters, especially in a country with diverse faiths and beliefs.

As the dust settles from this monumental gathering, questions linger over its true intentions and its potential impact on ongoing investigations. For now, the INC’s massive rally stands as a stark reminder of the powerful intersection of faith and politics in the Philippines, leaving both supporters and critics to ponder its long-term consequences.
