Victory Liner, a trailblazer in the Philippines’ transport sector, has made a groundbreaking leap into sustainable transportation with the launch of the country’s first fully electric provincial bus. This milestone, which took place at the Victory Liner motor pool in Quezon City, marks a new era in eco-friendly travel, one that promises to reduce carbon emissions, lower operating costs, and revolutionize the public transport landscape.
The company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint is embodied in the electric buses, which are designed to be both a symbol and a solution for a more sustainable future. Marivic H. Del Pilar, President and General Manager of Victory Liner, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is just the beginning of our commitment to carbon-neutral transportation. We hope to set a strong example for both government and private sectors to embrace electric vehicles nationwide.”
The unveiling of two electric buses, created in partnership with global electric vehicle manufacturer Higer, highlights the technological strides in green mobility. Equipped with state-of-the-art features, these buses boast an impressive range of 350-400 kilometers per charge, thanks to a powerful 485 kWh battery. The buses can be fully charged in just three hours with a 120 kW DC charger, making them a practical solution for the long-distance routes typical of provincial travel.
The environmental benefits are substantial: each electric bus can reduce CO₂ emissions by over 100 tons annually when compared to traditional diesel models. “This is a big step toward addressing climate change,” said Roy Jerusalem Cabonegro, President of the Makakalikasan Organization, who attended the launch. “The shift to electric buses not only cuts down on emissions but also improves air quality, which is crucial for public health.”
Beyond the environmental advantages, the transition to electric buses offers economic benefits as well. By cutting fuel and maintenance costs, Victory Liner is making a sustainable investment in the future of transportation. “These buses are not only environmentally friendly, but they also allow us to operate more efficiently. It’s a win-win for both the company and our passengers,” Del Pilar remarked.
The launch event also included a maiden voyage, where attendees were able to experience firsthand the comfort and quiet ride of the new buses. The buses’ modern features, such as spacious interiors and smooth, quiet operation, were designed to enhance the passenger experience while also promoting sustainability.
The introduction of electric buses is particularly timely, as the Philippines grapples with the urgent need to reduce pollution and meet international climate goals. The Makakalikasan Organization and the Imelda S. Elizalde Foundation, both strong supporters of the initiative, see Victory Liner’s move as a catalyst for broader change. “This is a pivotal moment for public transport in the Philippines,” said Imelda S. Elizalde, Chairman of the Imelda S. Elizalde Foundation. “It gives hope not just to our generation, but to future generations that a green, sustainable future is possible.”
Witnessing this historic unveiling was Department of Transportation (DOTr) Undersecretary Andy Ortega, who commended Victory Liner for its leadership in green mobility. “On behalf of the government, we would like to extend our gratitude to Victory Liner for their pioneering efforts in supporting the nation’s green mobility goals. This initiative not only aligns with our environmental commitments but also sets a powerful example for other transport operators to follow,” Ortega said.
While the launch is a major achievement, stakeholders recognize that the transition to electric buses across the country requires a supportive infrastructure. “We need more charging stations and a national commitment to renewable energy to make this system viable in the long term,” Cabonegro added. The call for more government and private sector investment in green infrastructure reflects the larger push to integrate electric vehicles into the public transport network.
This debut marks a significant milestone, but Victory Liner’s vision goes beyond just one bus model. The company plans to expand its electric fleet and hopes its move will inspire other transport companies to follow suit. As Victory Liner embarks on this green journey, it paves the way for a future where electric buses become the norm, not the exception.
In a time of political upheaval, where the Philippines is divided into various factions and leadership struggles, Victory Liner has chosen to unveil a unifying green solution that offers hope and a positive direction for the future. The launch of these electric buses stands as a testament to what can be achieved when the private sector leads with innovation and sustainability. Amidst the political challenges, this move serves as a powerful reminder that solutions to the country’s most pressing issues can still emerge from unity and collective action. It offers not only a greener future but a chance to uplift the Filipino spirit through shared purpose and progress—one electric bus at a time.
