Mud thrown at Spanish king & queen on visit to flood-hit town
An angry crowd of around 100 people in the flood-hit town of Paiporta in Valencia threw mud and eggs at Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and government officials during their visit to the area on Sunday.
The recent floods that hit the Valencia in Spain left more than 210 people dead with Paiporta accounting for a large portion.
Besides being pelted with mud and eggs, the furious crowd called the Spanish king and queen, and the goverment officials “murderers.”
The king’s bodyguards tried to shield him from the mud and eggs through an umbrella, and shoving away angry protestors.
In turn, the king said his country had to “understand the anger and frustration” of those affected, and ensured to that there is “hope and their guarantee that the state in its entirety is present.”
Reports also showed that Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez and Valencia regional government head Carlos Mazon were also targets of the anger from the flood victims.
“I understand the social anger and of course, I’m here to receive it. This is my political and moral obligation,” Mazon said in a post on X.
News videos from the scene also showed a few frustrated townspeople hitting the windows of the SUV of Sanchez’s before he and the local politicians quickly left.
Sanchez later said that while he understood the “anguish and suffering” of the victims, he issued a condemnation against “all forms of violence.”
