Rep. Rodante Marcoleta of SAGIP party-list and Manuel “Mar” Roxas II are the top names circulating in agricultural circles as the next Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Is the concurrent DA Secretary.
Roxas was the Department of Trade and Industry Secretary, Senator and Vice President, while Marcoleta aspired to be senator in the last polls.
Industry sources said that former Department of Defense Secretary Gilberto”Gibo” Teodoro was also considered for the position. Teodoro ran for president in 2010 but lost to the late President Noynoy Aquino.
Also, Roxas is seen to have an edge to be appointed DA secretary as he is the second cousin of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.
The rumors of Marcoleta or Roxas as the next DA Secretary comes at a time when the department is being criticized for allowing the prices of certain food commodities to skyrocket, like sugar and onions, among others.
