The largest purple-pink flawless diamond ever sold fetched nearly $30 million during a weekend auction in Hong Kong, Christie’s says.

Known as “The Sakura,” the fancy vivid diamond is 15.8 carats — the largest ever sold at auction — and was sold to an unnamed Asian buyer for $29.3 million on Sunday, said Vickie Sek, Christie’s Asia Pacific chairman of jewelry.

In pesos, the diamond’s price is P1.41 billion.

“We are very excited to have marked another important chapter in jewelry auction history today with The Sakura realizing a record-breaking price … continuing Christie’s tradition of offering the finest pink diamonds at auction,” she said in a statement.

The previous record for largest purple-pink diamond sold at auction was held by the 14.8-carat “The Spirit of the Rose.” It was sold for more than $27 million in November at an auction organized by Sotheby’s in Geneva, Switzerland.

Meanwhile, another notable pink diamond offered during Sunday’s auction also attracted a sizable bounty. Dubbed “The Sweet Heart,” the 4.2-carat fancy vivid pink diamond ring sold for $6.5 million.

“The strong sell-through rates and exceptional prices achieved for top-quality colored diamonds and gemstones reflect a robust market demand, and we look forward to extending this strong buying momentum to our upcoming live auction in New York” on June 8, Sek said.
