The Philippines’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases topped 83,000 on Tuesday after an additional 1,678 more infections, bringing the total to 83,673, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

This marks the 14th consecutive day during which more than 1,300 new cases were reported, the DOH said.

The DOH said the five provinces with the highest number of new cases were Metro Manila with 698, Laguna with 218, Cebu with 100, Cavite with 87, and Davao del Sur with 33.

Total recoveries also rose to 26,617 after 173 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease, while the death toll climbed to 1,947 with four new fatalities.

There are also 55,109 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, the highest across Southeast Asia.

Of this number, 90.2 percent are mild, 8.9 percent are asymptomatic, 0.5 percent are severe, and 0.4 percent are in critical condition.

The DOH said figures reported on Tuesday were based on data submitted by 81 out of the 91 operational laboratories.

The department also removed 45 duplicate cases from the total tally of infections.

The Philippines still has the second-highest number of COVID-19 infections across Southeast Asia between Indonesia with 100,303 cases and Singapore with 50,369.

Malacañang earlier said that the modified enhanced community quarantine may be reimposed over Metro Manila if cases breach 85,000 by Friday, July 31./Stacy Ang
