Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has signed an ordinance that requires fast-food restaurants to hire senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Under the ordinance, fast-food chains should provide employment to the city’s elderly and disadvantaged for “not more than 6 months.”

Each branch must employ two senior citizens and one PWD who will work for a minimum of four hours for at least four days each week.

They should receive minimum wage provided under the Labor Code.

The ordinance also prohibits companies assigning tasks to senior citizens and PWDs considered hazardous and beyond their capacity.

Domagoso  vowed last year to boost employment opportunities for the city’s elderly and disadvantaged.

The Manila government has  signed last year separate memorandum of agreements with fast-food giants Jollibee and McDonald’s to hire senior citizens staff members and PWDs./Stacy Ang
