Senate commends La Union surfer

Surfer Roger Casogay receives an accolade from Senate President Tito Sotto for his heroic deed during the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

For saving the life of a rival competitor instead of focusing on winning the gold medal, surfer Roger Casogay got feted as Fair Play Athlete of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games during the closing rites last Wednesday, December 11.

He helped rival Arip Nurhidayat of Indonesia back to safety after he got separated from his surfboard in the middle of competitions.

And with that, not only did Indonesian President Joko Widodo laud Casogay’s heroic deed but the Philippine Senate as well.

Seen in the photo is Senate President Vicente Sotto III handing out Senate Resolution No. 230, taking into consideration Senate Resolution 258, to Roger Casogay for rescuing an Indonesian competitor from drowning during the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games surfing competition in San Juan, La Union last December 6.

Also in photo are Senators Sherwin Gatchalian, Cynthia Villar, Richard Gordon, Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, Nancy Binay, Joel Villanueva, Imee Marcos, and Senate Majority Migz Zubiri. (PRIB photo by Joseph Vidal/10 December 2019).
