MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Senate hit the bullseye in giving Senator Migz Zubiri and his wards in Team Arnis PH special accolade as the sports discipline hit big time in the 30th Southeast Asian Games with 14 gold medals haul.
Even if the men’s volleyball and basketball prevail in their respective finals duel at press time Tuesday, they can never shake that number down as they would only be awarded 12 golds each team per SEAG regulation.
Aside from the impressive 14-gold medal haul, Arnis also netted four silvers and two bronzes for a total of 20 medals.
Next to arnis’ remarkable show, was PH’s dance sport side which contributed 10 gold medals.
This was followed by athletics and boxing which also delivered respectively in PH most impressive showing since it joined the biennial meet in 1977.
In 2005 where the country previously hosted, the Philippines grabbed the overall title with 113 golds, 84 silvers and 94 bronze medals for a total of 291 medals.
The present medal tally that the Philippines have today in its treasure chest of 341 still pales in comparison to Indonesia’s 476 total when it hosted the 26th SEAG. (LO/IAMIGO/CNS)
