State of calamity declared in Albay; 17 dead in Tisoy’s wrath

Manila, Philippines – At least 17 people have been reported killed as typhoon Tisoy ravaged the Bicol Region, Southern Tagalog and Eastern Visayas.

President Duterte is slated to visit the said areas today, Thursday (05 December 2019).

According to a report by the Police Regional Office (PRO) V, five were killed in Bicol Region; five in Oriental Mindoro; two in Marinduque; one in Ormoc City, Leyte and four in CALABARZON.

At least 19 people were reported injured while two others were missing.

Damage to agriculture also reached P811 million, the NDRRMC said.

The Bicol Region bore the brunt of Tisoy’s wrath with damage to crops pegged at P655 million, figures from NDRRMC showed.

Mimaropa, particularly in Oriental Mindoro, incurred P156 million damage.

The typhoon, known internationally as Kammuri, also damaged 27 schools and 112 houses in its wake, NDRRMC said.

In the initial estimate, up to P667,331,940 were damaged by crops, fish ponds and boats as well as livestock in the Bicol Region.

In addition, P156,524,438.50 recorded damage to crops and livestock in MIMAROPA.

Up to 123,912 families or 495,408 people were affected by the typhoons in Regions III, IV A, V, National Capital Region, and MIMAROPA.

More than 500,000 people were also evacuated from their homes due to the threat of storm surges, floods, and landslides.

The storm packed 75 kph winds near the center and 90 kph gusts as of 11 p.m. It was forecast to leave the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) Thursday morning. (Marian Sinamban/IAMIGO/CNS)
