EcoWaste: Avoid toxic candles during Undas

on

MANILA, Philippines – An environmental group has on Monday, 28 October 2019, urged Filipinos not to buy lead-cored wicked candles because they may have adverse health effects to millions who are expected to flock to cemeteries on All Saints’ Day.

EcoWaste Coalition said, lighting candles with lead wicks could pose a risk on lead poisoning, especially for children who may inhale lead vapors.

Candle emissions with lead-cored wicks “could lead to increased levels of blood lead in unborn babies, babies, and young kids” the group said.

These candles are being sold in market such as Binondo, Manila, the coalition said, most of which are red colored and placed in glass containers shaped like gourd, lotus and pineapple.

Instead, it is advised that the public buy locally-made candles as wicks with braided or twisted cotton. (Marian Andrei Sinamban/IAMIGO/CNS)
