Exploring Election Integrity and Economic Realities Under the Marcos Administration
The 2025 Midterm Elections reveal the deep political divisions within the Philippines. Attorney Renecio “Luke” Espiritu candidly shares his perspective on the election outcomes and the current state of the Marcos administration.
Attorney Espiritu expresses disappointment with the success of the Duterte-aligned candidates but celebrates the victories of the anti-Duterte forces, especially emphasizing the defeat of the Marcos political faction, which he calls the “biggest loser” in this election cycle.
He highlights the ongoing struggles within Philippine politics—between forces pushing for human rights, anti-corruption, and accountability, and the opposing forces of “darkness and evil.” Espiritu notes the difficulty of championing human rights today, where protecting rights often invites ridicule and misunderstanding.
Addressing election irregularities, he points out disturbing anomalies in the official vote counts, including unexplained changes in vote tallies that suggest manipulation or “vote shaving.” He stresses that fraud remains an ever-present reality in Philippine elections unless proven otherwise.
Regarding the Marcos administration, Attorney Espiritu criticizes its weak foundation, calling it fundamentally unstable due to the lack of popular support and the president’s failure to address pressing socio-economic issues like poverty and workers’ welfare. He is skeptical about the administration’s ability to correct its course within the remaining term, citing delays in wage increases and a lack of responsiveness to the people’s demands.
Espiritu also dismisses the recent cabinet reshuffle as a mere cosmetic change that does not tackle the root problems—the administration itself. He warns that without genuine solutions and the trust of the people, political instability will persist.
The interview concludes with a call for the Marcos administration to earn popular support by genuinely addressing the economic hardships faced by Filipinos. Only by doing so can it hope to strengthen its position amid political crises and growing challenges.
