Marcos, Duterte Ratings Dip: Leadership Faces Rising Scrutiny

on

Satisfaction ratings for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte have taken a significant hit, with the latest surveys revealing the lowest figures since their election in 2022. These developments, reported in January 2025, reflect growing public concern over the administration’s performance amid economic and political challenges.

The surveys, conducted in December 2024, show President Marcos’ satisfaction rating dropping by eight points to 56%, down from 64% earlier in the year. His net satisfaction score has decreased to +32, categorized as “moderate” from its previous “good” level. Vice President Duterte’s satisfaction rating saw a sharper decline, falling 12 points to 48%, marking a net satisfaction score of +20, classified as “moderate.”

The surveys, conducted nationwide with thousands of respondents, also indicate that trust in Duterte has dropped significantly, with her trust rating decreasing by 10 points to 47%. Meanwhile, President Marcos retains majority trust at 60%, although this figure has also declined from previous surveys.

Public dissatisfaction was driven by multiple factors, including the rising cost of living, slow recovery from recent natural disasters, and controversies surrounding key government policies. Analysts believe the dip in Duterte’s ratings may also be linked to her concurrent roles as Vice President and Education Secretary, with critics questioning her management of the education sector amid persistent issues such as learning poverty and resource shortages.

The Senate and House of Representatives also saw a decrease in public satisfaction, with net satisfaction scores dropping to +27 and +20, respectively. These ratings reflect public discontent with legislative efforts to address urgent national issues such as inflation, unemployment, and social services.

While President Marcos’ overall performance still garners majority support, the sharp decline in ratings raises questions about his administration’s ability to sustain public trust. Observers point out that his recent economic programs, including infrastructure development and trade agreements, have yet to translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens. Vice President Duterte, on the other hand, faces heightened scrutiny as dissatisfaction grows over her handling of public education reforms.

The ratings decline comes at a crucial time for the administration, as the 2025 midterm elections draw nearer. These results could influence the political landscape, potentially weakening the administration’s leverage in Congress and opening opportunities for opposition groups to capitalize on growing public discontent.

Political experts note that these surveys are a wake-up call for the administration to address the concerns of ordinary Filipinos. Immediate action on pressing issues such as inflation, healthcare, and education reforms will be critical in regaining public trust.

The surveys underscore the volatile nature of public opinion, highlighting the growing demand for effective governance and accountability. As satisfaction with key government officials declines, the challenge lies in addressing these concerns swiftly and decisively to prevent further erosion of public confidence.
