Judgement day: Trump wins US presidential polls

UPDATED 5PM

Despite the US and Western press forecasting a close race to the White House, Republican candidate Donald Trump won convincingly over Democratic opponent and outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday afternoon (Philppine Time), to become the 47th president of the United States.

As of 5pm of Wednesday (Philippine time), Trump notched 277 electoral colleges out of the required 270 to win the US presidential polls, according Fox News. As of 4pm, Harris got 224 electoral colleges and was seen losing the race.

As early as 1pm, there was already gloom over the headquarters of Harris as her supporters stopped cheering upon getting the initial results showing trump leading by 210 against 113 of the vice president, according to the Associated press.

Meanwhile, Trump’s supporters were seen celebrating and cheering at their candidate’s headquarters.

Trump later delivered his victory speech at his headquarters after he neared winning the 270 required electoral colleges required to become the next US president.

‘This is a magnificent victory for the American people that will allow us to make America great again,” Trump said in his speech before his supporters.

The Republicans were also reported to get control of the Senate, a development seen pivotal to pushing Trump’s agendas and policies in the next four years as the 47th president of the United States

Trump first became president in 2016, defeating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In 2020, Joe Biden beat Trump amid the pandemic in what was seen a close contest.

Trump’s win in the 2024 presidential polls makes him the second US president to serve non-consecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland, who served two terms in the late 1800s.
