Yesterday, August 16, 2024, at the Club Filipino, a significant edition of “The Agenda,” a regular weekly media forum focused on pressing issues in various sectors. The forum is organized by Impact Publications and Everything for Good Consultancy, Inc. This particular episode highlighted the Philippines’ impressive achievements at the 2024 Olympics and explored the current state of sports development in the country. Hosted by Attorney Fred Mison, the event drew media organizations and key figures from the sports community, including Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) Secretary General Valeriano “Bones” L. Floro II.
The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), established on January 30, 1911, initially as the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation and rebranded in 1989, is responsible for overseeing the country’s participation in the Olympic Games. The POC’s role includes promoting and developing sports, managing athlete selection, and providing training and financial support. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, who also serves as Mayor of Tagaytay and has previously represented Cavite’s 8th and 7th districts, currently leads the POC. His tenure has faced significant challenges, including allegations of mismanagement and conflicts with national sports associations (NSAs). Discussions at the forum, as highlighted in a Philippine News Agency (PNA) report, centered on Tolentino’s proposal for a dedicated House of the POC. This initiative aims to centralize sports administration, improve governance, and address internal conflicts that have disrupted operations and strained relationships with NSAs.
Tolentino’s leadership has been scrutinized due to notable disputes within the POC. The Manila Times reported that the need for a House of the POC was emphasized as a solution to these governance issues. Tolentino advocates for this centralized structure to better support and organize the POC’s activities, aiming to resolve past conflicts and enhance overall functionality.
The adequacy of funding and support for athletes has been a major concern. The POC has faced criticism for delays and insufficiencies in financial resources, impacting athletes’ training and performance. Efforts are ongoing to address these issues, including increased funding initiatives and better resource management, although challenges persist.
Following an internal audit that revealed financial discrepancies, the POC has initiated reforms to improve transparency and accountability. Changes in financial reporting practices and increased oversight have been implemented, but the effectiveness of these reforms remains under scrutiny.
The NGAP, established in 1997, is the official body for golf in the Philippines. It organizes tournaments, provides handicaps, and promotes the sport. Secretary General Valeriano “Bones” L. Floro II, who has been with NGAP for six years, also holds positions with the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation and the ASEAN Golf Federation. Floro’s extensive experience includes serving as the golf Team Leader for the Tokyo Olympics and as Chef de Mission for the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne and the Winter Olympics in Beijing.
A notable issue recently highlighted was the controversy involving golfer Dottie Ardina. Ardina publicly addressed a uniform mishap during the 2024 Olympics, taking a stand for the future of Philippine Olympians. Her actions underscored ongoing challenges related to sports management and athlete welfare, which were discussed extensively at the forum.
The forum celebrated the Philippines’ record-breaking performance in the 2024 Olympics and discussed strategies to build on this success and enhance future sports programs. Leadership and governance issues, particularly the proposal for a House of the POC, were examined as a means to resolve internal conflicts and improve organizational efficiency. Discussions also focused on the adequacy of funding and resources, with ongoing efforts to better support athletes.
The POC’s response to financial discrepancies revealed by an internal audit and the effectiveness of implemented reforms were reviewed. Additionally, complaints about favoritism and transparency in athlete selection were addressed, with a focus on ensuring a fair and equitable process. The forum highlighted the need for better support systems for athletes and addressed challenges faced by the sports community, providing a comprehensive view of the current state of sports in the Philippines.
