1Sambayan has chosen Vice President Maria “Leonor” Robredo as its presidential bet for 2022, it was revealed on Thursday.

“1Sambayan is pleased to announce to the nation that it has reached a decision to endorse Vice President Leni Robredo as its presidential candidate for the May 2022 elections,” said retired senior associate justice Antonio Carpio, the group’s lead convenor.

The group said 1Sambayan followed a rigorous process in deciding on its 2022 presidential candidate.

“1Sambayan followed a rigorous process in reaching its decision. We consulted our local and foreign chapters as well as our partners together with our three million members,” he added.

However, Robredo has not yet issued a statement accepting the 1Sambayan’s choosing or endorsing her as its standard bearer. The Vice President in the past days and weeks has been meeting with other presidential candidates to form a united front for the opposition.

Among those she met were Senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, who have made their respective proclamations to run for president in 2022.

1Sambayan describes itself as a broad coalition opposed to the policies of President Rodrigo Duterte.
