Globe Telecom is aiming to have around 80 percent of Metro Manila covered with its
fifth-generation network by the end of 2020.
The telecom firm said in a statement on Wednesday that it has also been increasing its
efforts to expand its 5G scope also outside of Metro Manila.
“We have a very active 5G development in Metro Manila and we hope to cover 80
percent of that soon.
We are probably in the two-thirds range right now,” Gil Genio, Globe chief technology and information officer, said in a statement.
Globeintroduced 5G services to its home subscribers in July 2019 and has made the
latest telecom technology available to key areas in Metro Manila.
It has also expanded its 5G reach to the Visayas, particularly in Bacolod, Boracay, Iloilo, Talisay, Lapu-Lapu, Cordova, Minglanilla and Cebu City.
In Mindanao, Globe has established its 5G footprint in Davao City and Cagayan De Oro.
However, competitor Smart Communications beat Globe as the pioneer in 5G services
in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Although the two telecom giants have been deploying their 5G infrastructures and
services, only those who have smartphones or hand sets that are 5G-compatible can
experience telecom’s latest technology. CURRENTPH
