NBI to probe mysterious death of Ex-Cong

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is trying to piece together several leads to resolve who killed former Batangas Congressman and practicing lawyer Edgar Mendoza.

Mendoza, who would have turned 70 this January 15, was one among three people found inside a burning car in Tiaong Quezon province two days ago. Initial probe suggest that Mendoza along with two others were killed first before the car was burned by the perpetuators.

Mendoza’s friend, Deputy Speaker Raneo Abu describes Mendoza’s family as “still in shock” after learning of the gruesome death of the simple and unassuming former legislator and lawyer.

“Right now, the family still can’t give any developments, but [Mendoza’s] daughter who is also a lawyer is reviewing the cases he was handling for possible clues,” Abu shared with a reporter in an interview.

Abu says that Mendoza does not have any known enemy. After his stint in Congress, the ex-Congressman maintained a private law practice in his home province of Batangas. Two days ago, Mendoza was reported missing shortly after visiting his daughter based in Laguna.

It was Abu who replaced Mendoza as representative of the second district of Batangas. Mendoza served as Congressman during the 1998-2001 session.
