Militant women’s organization Gabriela Women’s Party expressed on Sunday support to Frankie Pangilinan, daughter of Senator Francis Pangilinan and actress Sharon Cuneta, amid the string of troll hate speech and even rape threats she received for standing up against victim-blaming on rape.
A certain Sonny Alcos allegedly said on social media that she would find Frankie and rape her.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered authorities to investigate and find the suspect.
“No one deserves to be threatened with sexual violence for merely voicing out political beliefs,” the party said in a statement over the weekend.
“Rape is a serious criminal offense, and hence should never be used casually under any circumstance,” they said.
Frankie has been vocal on social media against “rape culture,” saying a person’s attire is not an invitation to rape.
She recently trended on social media after she responded to TV and radio personality Ben Tulfo’s remarks on rape, in which he called her “hija.”
Shortly after, Frankie started using the hashtag #HijaAko, and even went on to change her Twitter name to “Hija” and encouraged people to be stronger than their abusers.
The threat earned the ire of Cuneta, who vowed that she will find Alcos and bring him to justice.
The actress vowed to exhaust all means to bring to justice the said person.
“I. WILL. FIND. YOU. YOU FACE ME, YOU COWARD. DUWAG. TANDAAN MO KUNG SINO AKO. NANAY NI KC, FRANKIE, MIEL, AT MIGUEL. YOU CROSSED THE LINE,” Cuneta said on social media.
“GOD HELP ME AND THE LAW! GOD HELP YOU WHEN I FIND YOU. HINDI KITA PATATAHIMIKIN. TANDAAN MO ITO: AKO AY ANAK NI PABLO P. CUNETA. MALI ANG BINANGGA MO, DEMONYO KA,” she added.
“This rape threat against individuals bravely speaking truth to power manifests the kind of dangerous bigotry and macho-fascism that is flowing from the source — no less than President Duterte — down to his supporters,” the Gabriela Women’s Party said.
“This is the same kind of rape threats being used by Duterte’s supporters even against Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas, Kabataan Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago, multi-awarded actress Angel Locsin and other brave Filipino women speaking against the rampant rights violations and social injustice under the Duterte regime,” it added.
The party-list insisted that “intolerance to criticism and rotten fanaticism for Duterte must stop.”
“Independent voices must be allowed to thrive without any fear of being in harm’s way. Stop using rape threats to silence critical voices!” it said./Stacy Ang
