The Philippines has reported 590 more coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases on Saturday, with both fresh and old cases, bringing the total to 17,224.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), 252 of the new cases were “fresh cases” and the remaining 338 were “late cases,” which were based on test results released to patients four days ago or more.
Total recoveries rose to 3,808 with 88 new ones, while eight more fatalities brought the death toll to 950.
The DOH said there are 11,972 active cases. Of these, 714 or 6 percent are asymptomatic, 11,184 or 93.4 percent are mild, 56 or 0.5 percent are severe, and 18 or 0.2 percent are in critical condition.
Meanwhile, 37 laboratories in the country have been given certification to test for the virus.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Friday said that the DOH was changing the way it was reporting the number of confirmed cases in the country.
The DOH previously said that the spike in infections this week was due to the agency’s increased capacity to validate cases after more encoders were hired.
Despite easing into a general community quarantine by June 1, Vergeire reminded the public to follow health protocols against the illness.
“Bagamat inaasam natin lahat ito, ang pagluwag ng mga guidelines magmula pa po ng ECQ, kami ay nagpapaalala pa rin sa ating mga health protocols,” Vergeire said at a live briefing.
“Kahit nasa GCQ na tayo, hindi po ibig sabihin na relaxed na rin po tayo sa mga protocls natin,” she added./Stacy Ang
