Transforming Footbridges, Transforming Lives: EcoBridges in Action
Walking in Metro Manila has long been dubbed as a survival test and an exercise in endurance rather than enjoyment. Navigating congested streets, dodging traffic, and braving the tropical heat are part of the daily grind for many city dwellers. Even something as seemingly simple as crossing the road can feel like an obstacle course, thanks to the city’s long neglected pedestrian infrastructure. For years, the dream of a walkable, commuter- friendly Metro Manila has seemed just that—a dream.
However, what seems to be a far-fetched dream is slowly materializing through the collaborative effort of private companies and the local government. At the forefront of this transformation is Ecobridges Ads Inc., a company that aims to rewrite the narrative of urban mobility by turning Metro Manila’s forgotten and dilapidated footbridges into safe, clean, and inviting pathways.
More than just a business providing billboard ad spaces, Ecobridges has found a way to invest in the daily lives of commuters.
Ecobridges does more than rehabilitate and construct footbridges—they ensure that every step of the process is aligned with their mission to create accessible, walkable cities. Most importantly, these projects are entirely funded by the company’s advertising revenue from the ad placements on the footbridge, meaning no public funds are used for their construction or maintenance.
This unique approach allows local governments to prioritize other essential services without jeopardizing the provision of much-needed pedestrian infrastructure. Every footbridge is strategically planned based on areas of greatest need, ensuring maximum impact. Through this initiative, Ecobridges demonstrates that private companies can drive meaningful change without burdening taxpayers.
“Every footbridge we donate and maintain is our way of giving back to the community,” said Atty. Aquino Ambray, Director of Ecobridges. “Our goal is to show that cities can be safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone, one footbridge at a time.”
The results speak for themselves: safer crossings, well-lit pathways, shaded roofing, vertical gardens, and even round-the-clock security. Ecobridges has turned what were once neglected, graffiti-covered overpasses into vibrant, commuter-friendly spaces that improve daily life.
Today, many of these revamped footbridges offer a glimpse of what a commuter-friendly city could look like—one where walking is no longer a last resort but a pleasant part of the journey.
For daily commuters, these improvements are more than just aesthetic; they are practical and empowering. The message is clear: someone is finally investing in the people’s commute, prioritizing safety, comfort, and dignity over the bare minimum of moving from point A to B.
“Ecobridges does not only look into fixing footbridges but we also want to take part in fixing the larger system,” says Atty. Ambray. “We envision this project to be a starting point in the transformation of Metro Manila as a safe and walkable city”
From Chaos to Convenience: The Quiapo Footbridge Story

One standout example of Ecobridges’ commitment to enhancing pedestrian infrastructure is the Quiapo footbridge which the company donated to the City of Manila in 2014 and is still standing and serving thousands of pedestrians visiting Quiapo’s shops and the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, or most famously known as the Quiapo church.
Before Ecobridges made the donation, pedestrians had to traverse the very busy Quezon boulevard which is teeming with jeepneys, private vehicles, other kinds of transportation and informal peddlers, to name a few. This makes the area traffic prone to accidents. Ecobridges saw this struggle and proposed to construct an overpass to ease the burden of the pedestrians.
Ecobridges also stepped up the service a notch and provided a 24/7 CCTV system, solar powered LED lighting system, a security guard roving on the footbridge, plus plants to make the walk pleasing. Even in the busy streets of Manila, this footbridge eases the
commuter experience. The footbridge provided a safe pathway for pedestrians and eased the road traffic.
“We wanted to contribute to making Manila—our city’s center—more walkable and accessible for pedestrians, making it easier for them to get from point A to point B,” said Atty. Ambray. “Partnering with the city government was key to turning this vision into reality.”
This collaboration between the private sector and local government serves as a promising step toward a more pedestrian-friendly Metro Manila, proving that even the busiest areas can prioritize safety, convenience, and accessibility for everyone.
From Campus to Community: Securing Footbridges for Students

From the ecobridge in Quiapo, the company has also partnered with other areas in Metro Manila. And because Ecobridges takes safety and security of pedestrians seriously, it has partnered with the local government of Quezon City and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) to ensure that security guards are available on top of the 24/7 CCTV surveillance. This setup provides an added layer of protection, particularly for student pedestrians.
This accessible pathway is a game-changer for students, connecting the university to the opposite street where dormitories and restaurants are located. The convenience of this secure, well-maintained footbridge allows students to save precious time during their daily routines, whether heading to class, grabbing a meal, or returning to their accommodations.
“Safety and security are at the core of what we do,” said Atty. Ambray. “By implementing these measures across all the footbridges we manage, we’re not only making pedestrian infrastructure safer but also fostering a sense of security within the communities we serve.”
Through strategic collaborations like this, Ecobridges continues to set a standard for pedestrian infrastructure that goes beyond functionality—prioritizing safety, accessibility, and community well-being in Metro Manila.
Crossing Made Easy: Ecobridges Champions Accessibility for All

Aside from its security, Ecobridges is also transforming these footbridges by making it more accessible to its users. A prime example is the Masinag footbridge, located at the intersection of Sumulong Highway and Marcos Highway. Equipped with four fully- functioning elevators, operational from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., the footbridge ensures that senior citizens, students, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and even those carrying heavy loads can cross the busy streets with ease.
For a time, the elevators were non-functional given the lack of budget by the local government unit, causing frustration among commuters who were left without an accessible option. Responding swiftly to public clamor, Ecobridges stepped in and prioritized repairs, ensuring the elevators are now operational. This intervention has not only improved the daily commute for countless pedestrians but also reinforced Ecobridges’ dedication to maintaining inclusive infrastructure.
Today, the Masinag footbridge is celebrated as one of the most inclusive in Metro Manila, seamlessly integrating safety and accessibility. Senior citizens now enjoy a hassle-free way to reach nearby health facilities and markets, while students use the footbridge to safely access nearby schools and establishments.
The Masinag footbridge has become a lifeline for the community, transforming a once- daunting intersection into a model of urban accessibility. Through its efforts, Ecobridges demonstrates its unwavering commitment to creating infrastructure that works for everyone, making Metro Manila safer and more inclusive one footbridge at a time.
Walkable Filipino Cities: A Vision Within Reach
By seamlessly merging innovative advertising platforms with essential pedestrian infrastructure, Ecobridges is setting a new benchmark for what it means to create a safe, accessible, and walkable commuter experience.
True enough, each Ecobridge rehabilitated becomes a symbol of what’s possible when public and private sectors collaborate for the greater good. Senior citizens navigating busy intersections without stress, students crossing safely to reach schools and dorms, and PWDs moving without barriers—these are not just improvements; they are transformative changes that enhance quality of life for all. Moreover, by combining sustainability with practicality, their model shows that infrastructure projects can do more than provide function; they can build community trust, increase safety, and encourage inclusivity. This is more than an investment in structures; it’s an investment in people, ensuring every pedestrian feels seen, valued, and protected.
“Our hope is that this project can inspire other cities to embrace similar initiatives, making Metro Manila more walkable, pedestrian-friendly, and convenient for everyone,” said Atty. Ambray.
Local governments, private companies, and organizations not only in Metro Manila but across the country now have an opportunity to replicate and even expand on these initiatives. By collaborating with Ecobridges, cities can ensure that no Filipino has to risk safety or comfort just to cross the street.
So the next time you see a billboard on an Ecobridge, smile and think of the many benefits it is giving to the community—a safer crossing for a senior, a faster commute for a student, or an easier journey for a parent with a heavy load. Behind every ad is a story of change, a step toward building a future where walkable, accessible, and safe cities are the rule, not the exception.
As urbanization continues to shape the Philippine landscape, projects like Ecobridges serve as a call to action—a reminder that we have the tools to design cities that work for everyone. Together, with commitment and collaboration, we can create a future where walkable Filipino cities are a nationwide reality.
