OCTA Research sees Covid cases reaching 1 million by end-April

OCTA Research warned on Monday that the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the Philippines can reach at least one million before the end of April.

“Before the end of April, the Philippines is expected to have recorded more than 1 million total Covid cases,” the research group said in it its latest monitoring report.

The total number of Covid-19 cases as of Sunday is 795,051.

OCTA Research said that while it observed some reductions in new Covid-19 cases in Metro Manila, rapid increases were noted in other cities also in the metropolis.

It said lower one-week increases in Covid-19 cases were seen in the cities of Manila, Parañaque, Marikina, and Navotas, while a negative trend was observed in Pasay and Makati.

However, “rapid increases” were logged in the cities of Mandaluyong, Las Piñas, and San Juan.

“The goal is for these LGUs to have low or negative one-week growth rates in new Covid-19 cases very soon,” OCTA Research stressed.

The research group also recommended increasing the hospital bed capacity and intensive care units (ICUs) for Covid-19 patients.

“The addition of hospital beds and ICUs for Covid-19 has helped reduce hospital bed occupancy in some LGUs (local government units), but these will be filled up soon as the NCR Plus is expected to have a high number of new Covid-19 cases during the month of April,” it also said.
